The Evidence-based Reading & Writing and the Essay challenge students to comprehend, infer, correct, and analyze texts both as readers and as authors. Our instruction, accordingly, teaches students how to comprehend, infer, and analyze texts through the practice of annotation and through the habituation of analytical inquiry. Our in-class seminar consists of an interactive approach wherein we require the students’ participation; this includes: lecture, discussion, group work, and individual practice. In addition to our seminar, we require all students to complete homework independently to refine these skills. Also, we encourage students to contact our instructors via email if they encounter a question or have a general inquiry they cannot answer themselves. Our course is intentionally rigorous to adequately prepare each student for each and every challenge the SAT presents and so that they experience the meaning of perseverance.
